Smitten by Britain: The King's Speech

Everyone is talking about The King's Speech. Mr Grigg and I are off to see it this weekend,with Mr and Mrs Sheepwash and Mr and Mrs Champagne-Charlie, in The Enchanted Village hall. We've reserved seats because it's already a sell-out.

We're lucky in these parts to enjoy the wonderful services of Moviola, a touring cinema celebrating ten years this year.

    I haven't seen it yet, but look forward to getting out this week. There's no one I know who hasn't loved it. We have half a dozen movie theatres within driving distance, so we can take our pick.

    I also saw it on Sunday - good, but it's been hypoed so much that it's almost bound to disappoint. Helena Bonham Carter was excellent I thought - and she's not getting many mentions otherwise! Lucylastic

Batten down those hatches, it's recycling day

It's blowing a hooley out there.  The wind is lashing against the windows and the dogs are play fighting in front of the Aga before one of them goes too far and I have to break up the party. It's recycling day today and the wind knows it, whipping up through the street into the square and down the alleyway from the church to present the village with a soggy mess of paper, cereal packets and plastic all along the side of the road, a twice-monthly confetti for the marriage of consumerism and environmental guilt. You can tell a lot about people from what's in their rubbish. Forget about stealing ID, I'm talking about their character - where they shop, the type of people they are. A small, white bottle with a label denoting that it's  kefir,  a fermented milk drink good for the gut, rolls around my doorstep.
