Bridport Hat Festival: now it's time to put on our thinking caps

Image
After our first foray into  Bridport Hat Festival , at which Mr Grigg and I rather boringly wore our trusty Panamas purchased from a little shop in the delightful small town of Salento, high in the Colombian Andes, it's now time to put on our thinking caps. In 2019, we need a mass entry from Lush Places that really captures the spirit of our lively little community. We've managed to miss Bridport's wonderful celebration of all things hats ever since it began nine years ago. But next year, we'll delay our holiday not only for the Melplash Show (my favourite day of the West Dorset year) but also the hat festival. On Saturday, we ventured into my kind of town, found a place to park and wandered up the street. Everyone, but everyone, was wearing hats. Even the dogs. There were market stall holders in hats. Siblings in hats. Friends in hats. If you weren't wearing a hat, you stood out like a naked, sore thumb. There were...

Broadchurch - this time it's personal

Broadchurch  fever is gripping the nation. Well, at least it seems like that around these parts. I'm sorry not to have written about anything else for The World from my Window over the last few weeks, but it's taking over my life. As part of my day job at Bridport Electric Palace , I've been involved in persuading series writer Chris Chibnall - soon to be chief writer for Doctor Who - to come along for a question and answer session following the live screening of the last-ever episode on Easter Monday, 17 April. The event sold out within days and everyone is very excited. It's a charity screening in aid of    Dorset Rape Crisis Support Centre and The Dorset Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC). Both organisations were consulted extensively throughout Chris’s writing process and on in to production. You can read more about that here . In the Grigg household, we're hooked on  Broadchurch .  I almost choked on my secret chocolate stash at the s...

Image
Once upon a time when my alter ego was editor of the Bridport and Lyme Regis News , she introduced a feature in the paper which became very popular. Never mind wills of the week or court cases involving the usual suspects. What grabbed the readers' imagination was Where in The World . We'd ask for photos of them, the newspaper and an interesting location. A silly idea but, then, that's me all over. And bingo, the pictures began to pour in. I think it's trickled down to an occasional drip now, which is probably just as well because, really, does anyone want to see some random person's holiday snaps week after week? 'I can't believe people are interested any more,' said a friend from the village. Probably not. Still, at the time, a lot of people were. There were photos at Mount Everest base camp, Bridport in Tasmania, outside the Taj Mahal, on the Eiffel Tower, the Empire State Building, the CN Tower and even underwater. Hell, there was one t...
