The Durrells, Corfu, Dodoni and many other things

Back in Corfu and we've just learned that the village where we lived for a year is set to become another film location for The Durrells.

But we're here only for a few more days so we will miss all the excitement.

Still, we've walked up the beach to see the house which the family make their home, in the television version at least, and seen evidence in town today of areas being cordoned off for filming in a few days' time.

When it comes to The Durrells, we know they're going to just love our village and one location in particular. It's one of my favourite places.

Talking of excitement, we also missed the annual parade to mark the 153rd anniversary of the unification of the Ionian Islands. We hear there were aerobatics above Garitsa Bay as a Greek fighter jet wound its way over Corfu Town.

We were on the other side of the Corfu Channel at the time, enjoying the most wonderful filoxenia (kindness to strangers) in Dodoni.

If you ever get the chance to visit this magical place, do so - it's the home of the oracle of Zeus (a singing, ringing oak tree) and a 'must-see' stop when touring the mainland and the beautiful Epirus region. Today, it's home to one of the leading producers of Feta cheese.

Our short stay in this region was made all the more special because we returned to the Mirtali Art Hotel after first visiting this place six years ago, when I wrote about it for my one-time sister blog, The World From My Porthole.

Greece and its islands. What a place.

That's about it.

  2. Hi Maddie, could you please tell me exactly where this house is please? We visit Corfu regularly but have never managed to spot it! I think it is probably nearer town than we venture to in our small boat.

  3. It's at Kontokali. You turn off the main road on the corner to the beach and can walk right up to it.
