Back to the future via Singapore

It's back to the future as we prepare to leave Singapore for dear old England, if the gale-force winds allow us to land.

Singapore: clean, spacious, well-managed, traffic-flowing, entertainment island, party- until-you-drop, old buildings like Raffles, new buildings that look like spaceships, Chinatown, Little India, black pepper crabs, smiling natives, tourist buses, river boat cruises and the gorgeous taste and smells and colours of all that food.












Plenty of Singapore noodles but no time for a Singapore Sling at Raffles, Pondside, as your English double, Mrs Bancroft got there first. However, a trip to Vancouver - maybe to visit the Canadian rellies - could be on the cards...

It's been an amazing trip and we're not home yet.

    Oooooh, Maddie - just the thought of a Singapore Sling in Raffles' bar. The closest I ever got was a sling in the bar of the Chateau Laurier in frigid Ottawa. C'mon over to BC and we'll show you around the Island when you've finished with the rellies in Vancouver.

    If you came to Canada now, you'd be in time for the aftermath of the Olympics.

    Singapore sounds so inviting. Looks inviting, too!

Batten down those hatches, it's recycling day

It's blowing a hooley out there.  The wind is lashing against the windows and the dogs are play fighting in front of the Aga before one of them goes too far and I have to break up the party. It's recycling day today and the wind knows it, whipping up through the street into the square and down the alleyway from the church to present the village with a soggy mess of paper, cereal packets and plastic all along the side of the road, a twice-monthly confetti for the marriage of consumerism and environmental guilt. You can tell a lot about people from what's in their rubbish. Forget about stealing ID, I'm talking about their character - where they shop, the type of people they are. A small, white bottle with a label denoting that it's  kefir,  a fermented milk drink good for the gut, rolls around my doorstep.
